A Matter of Survival: Global Stories of Trust, Connection, and Healing

Sophia Zamudio-Haas is an expert in Coming Out, on both a personal and professional level. Her research with and among intersectional communities of LGBT people, youth, people who inject drugs, and sex workers has led her all around the world to conduct interviews documenting the strength and resilience of survivors, who weigh the benefits and risks of disclosing their sexuality, gender identity, HIV status, drug use, or sexual behavior in order to access life-saving services. In this Grey Matters talk, Sophia will chart the universality of public health crises driven by stigmatization, be it in the San Francisco Bay Area or the heart of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Drawing on her personal experiences as well as her research, Sophia will speak to the profound healing power of solidarity and connection, and the spaces which must first be created to rebuild the trust of survivors.

Sophia Zamudio-Haas is a qualitative researcher at the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She specializes in community based, participatory research methods. Dr. Zamudio- Haas received her Master’s in Science from Harvard School of Public Health, with a concentration in Women, Gender and Health, and her Doctor in Public Health from UC Berkeley. She has led and collaborated in HIV research and health systems strengthening projects in 15 different country contexts and speaks Spanish and Portuguese. She is a writer, whose manuscripts have been published in several peer reviewed scientific journals.  Her work focuses on exploring the ways in which people overcome extreme adversity, to survive and thrive, while changing systems that seek to marginalize and oppress difference.
